This painting showcases a Druid woman with a flaming staff being led through the wood at night by a mystical stag spirit. The spirit seems to be leading the way, turning slightly to make sure the woman is following.  The entire dark wood is lit up by their presence. In the pool at their feet, only the woman casts a shadow with the spirit casting only light into the water emphasizing her mortality even though she commands magic. The symbolism in this painting is reminiscent of the Hermit major arcana in the Tarot.
